For 604 Record’s JoJo Mason, the past three years have been an incredible journey.
Now, with four Top 10 tracks under his belt, the west coast artist is ready to hit the ground running once again, and he’s more than excited to see what’s on the horizon.
Mason’s aptly titled new single, “Future”, hit radio on October 3rd and was released digitally on October 5th.
It’s a song that peaked Mason’s interest immediately, and one that blended his two favourite musical styles; country, and a little bit of soul.
Written by Nashville singer/songwriter Mitchell Tenpenny, “Future” paints a vivid picture of what can happen when one certain moment changes your life in ways no one could ever imagine. For JoJo, the track is nothing short of a game changer.
“In my life, and in my career, I knew it was time to grow, and that’s really what this next song is about,” he explained. “It has a bit more maturity to it. You always want to get better and evolve, and while I think the sound of my previous music is great and I’m super-proud of it, it’s time to move forward and give fans something new.”
Already known for having fun both on-stage and in the studio, as well as appreciating life and sharing stories, JoJo has continued to charm the Canadian country music world, and he shows no signs of slowing down.
“I’m excited to get a bunch of elements together — things I’ve been into for pretty much my whole life and inject them into this new song,” he said. “It’s really all about change, and that’s a big thing for me right now.”
Far from a new concept, change has been a constant theme in the musician’s life, and, he’s stronger for it.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Mason spent most of his early years like many Canadian kids — playing hockey on ice rinks and frozen lakes. With the opportunity of a successful career in the sport, he relocated to Victoria, BC in 2004 to play at the junior level, but this pursuit suddenly came to a halt after suffering a herniated disk. The injury was devastating to his future in hockey and sent him drifting down an unknown road without a destination.
While some may have let such a setback get them down, Mason’s infectious optimism led him down a new path — one that would see him climb the charts as one of Canada’s most beloved country music artists.
And it’s been a busy couple of years.
After releasing his first single “It’s All Good” in June of 2015, the track became the No. 1 most added song at radio in its first and third weeks of release, an accomplishment that has never before been achieved by an independent artist’s debut single in Canadian radio history, and it didn’t take long to hit the Top 10 on both the Mediabase and BDS charts. JoJo’s second single, “Good Kinda Love” dropped later that year and quickly became his second Top 10 hit.
With two consecutive Top 10 singles out of the gate, JoJo joined forces with 604 Records for his third release, “Red Dress”, in the Spring of 2016.
By 2017, JoJo had released his highly anticipated debut album Both Sides Of The Bar, while “Something To Wrap My Heart Around” became his highest charting single and third Top 10 hit, peaking at No. 8 on the Canadian Country Charts. He was also nominated for the Rising Star Award at the 2017 CCMA Awards in Saskatoon.
